Every year, in January, I take some time to reset myself as an artist. Usually, this focuses on songwriting and creative writing. Back in 2020, I dedicated myself to learning music production online during the pandemic, and along the way, I met incredible people from all over the world who were also pursuing music business projects online. One of these wonderful people is Michael Averill from Canada, and over the recent years, I’ve become a part of his Write Songs You Love community on Facebook, based on his podcast. I got into it through his Tea Cup Challenge, which is a songwriting challenge to encourage songwriters to write without overthinking and get something done within the timeframe it takes to finish drinking a cup of tea, coffee, or whatever your preferred beverage may be. Clever and efficient!
This year, I did not finish the challenge since my schedule was tied up with a few things in January. However, I did complete 3 new songs, and that always feels nice. I also thought about the prompts each day and came up with a few ideas even if I did not sit down to work on them. The value of songwriting for musicians of any age is that you push creative mindsets into action. It’s not always about creating a famous song or even releasing the songs you make, but exercising the muscles we use to create music because that is valuable in its own way. I appreciate programs like Michael’s and encourage others to write songs whenever they can, even if there is no goal to release music. Being creative is a powerful tool for our minds to grow and express ourselves. It is calming and relaxing for many, and motivating for others. Songwriting has always provided me that platform of expression in my personal and professional life, and I am truly thankful for the gift of song.
